Job Description


Performs a wide range of sample preparation and/or analysis per published methods and Standard Operating Procedures, which may include specialized methods and independent activities.

  • Preparing and/or analyzing environmental samples based on published methods and Pace Standard Operating Procedures
  • Following quality control procedures as outlined in documented procedures
  • Directing specific laboratory projects from set-up to completion
  • Preparing standards and reagents
  • Evaluating and performing calibrations
  • Documenting all lab activities in applicable logbooks and databases (e.g. sample prep, sample analysis, standard and reagent prep, instrument maintenance, etc.)
  • Entering data into Pace Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) as applicable
  • Performing routine maintenance of equipment and instrumentation, including troubleshooting on multiple systems
  • Responsible for keeping applicable workspaces clean and safe
  • Disposing of samples and by-products per required procedures
  • Handling of waste products per required procedures
  • Reviewing data from other analysts, if applicable, and recognizing discrepancies in data. Able to validate data from potentially several methods and instruments
  • Attending required company and department meetings
  • Completing required training activities within require timeframes
  • Leading method development and modifications as needed
  • Assisting with training of other analysts
  • Assisting with review and preparation of SOPs and training documents
  • Promoting cooperation and teamwork among staff
  • Following Pace policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

  • BA/BS in chemistry or related science plus 5 or more years environmental drinking water experience; or 10 years of related laboratory experience with no degree
  • Familiarity with 537, 549 & 525 methods a plus
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to communicate effectively at a highly technical level both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
